Basic Saiyan
Saiyans have a unique ability to greatly raise their power levels by becoming super saiyans. There are four official super saiyan forms and one unofficial form that will be explained in more detail later. This change is usually triggered in saiyans by extreme anger or desperate situations. Rarely, a saiyan can rise to another level by pushing themself to the limit in training, but this doesn't occur as much as, like I said, by extreme anger or desperate situations.
The natural form of a full-blood saiyan is characterized by black hair, a tail, and a chiseled physique. Unlike Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta who cut off their tails most saiyans keep their tails connected. Saiyans have special abilities like ki (energy) blasts, flying, and the Oozaru form. A saiyan will always go into Oozaru form (shown below) under a full moon if they have a tail. Most saiyans will never surpass this normal form of a saiyan but can become relatively powerful in the normal state of a saiyan.
Oozaru
All Saiyans with tails have the ability to transform into Oozaru (were-monkeys) when exposed to the light of the full moon. The Saiyans eventually developed ki-spheres that mimic the full moon, allowing them to go Oozaru at will. In Oozaru form, a Saiyan has ten times his natural strength, and grows to King-Kong proportions. The level of control an Oozaru can manifest depends upon the training and experience of that person: when Goku went Oozaru as a young boy in Dragon Ball, he ran amok and nearly killed his friends. When Vegeta went Oozaru in the Saiyan Saga, he was able to speak, and maintained all memories. Most often, the way to defeat an Oozaru involves cutting off his tail... but tails are known to regenerate suddenly (especially in young Saiyans).
Super Saiyan
Very, very few Saiyans are able to attain this level of power (although coincidentally, nearly all Saiyans or even half-Saiyans on DBZ can do it). This is the power of legends, as the last Super Saiyan before modern times lived thousands of years ago. The Super Saiyan transformation is at first triggered when a Saiyan of superior strength and ability faces great emotional trauma or epiphany, but once achieved a Super Saiyan can undergo the transformation at will. Their hair turns gold and stands straight, their eyes become pupiless turquoise, and their auras burn golden. Goku is the first to go Super Saiyan, after witnessing Frieza kill Krillin.
Ascended Super Saiyan
This might as well be an entirely separate level of Super Saiyan, as the power increases dramatically from the first level. This form is a bit bulkier than Level One, but still manages to be supremely fast. Vegeta is the first to demonstrate this level of power, when he faces Cell Level 2 after training in the Room of Spirit and Time.
Super Saiyan 2
This form is much stronger than any of the Ascended levels, and much quicker as well. Physically, SS2 looks a great deal like SS1: sleek, blond hair, burning aura... only this time, there are flashes of electricity in the aura. Like SS1, this transformation is also brought on by emotional trauma. Gohan is the first to go SS2, after witnessing Cell destroy Android Sixteen, but is eventually achieved by Vegeta and Goku as well.
Super Saiyan 3
This level is easily distinguishable from the other forms... for now, instead of merely standing up, the blonde hair grows to just about ankle length, and stands out in thick locks. Also, the brow slopes, like a caveman's. Goku first learned to reach this level in the afterlife, and is wary that his living body may not be able to handle the transformation. He first uses SS3 in combat against Fat Buu, and his performance suggests this level is greatly more powerful than SS2. Goku and Gotenks are the only ones to go SS3.
Golden Oozaru
During the fight against Baby (whom has possessed Vegeta), we see Goku transform into a Golden Oozaru. The Supreme Kai, and Old Supreme Kai, pulled Goku's tail back out, so as to release his Saiyan power as fully as possible. When Goku looks up to Earth, it reflects enough light (17 million Zeno units to be precise) to transform him into an Oozaru. However, as Goku is now a much stronger warrior, his Oozaru transformation boosts up even more to become a Golden Oozaru, as opposed to a normal Oozaru. The power boost of a normal Oozaru is considered to be 10x, so you can imagine this Golden Oozaru transformation would increase the power even more!
Goku is unable to control himself in his Oozaru form, and so is unable to control himself in the Golden Oozaru form. When Baby Vegeta is exposed to enough light (using a series of rays created by Bulma), he too transforms into a Golden Oozaru. However, he is able to retain his reason and controls himself.
Super Saiyan 4
Super Saiyan 4 is an immense change and the last official level of Super Saiyan. The saiyan's hair becomes black once again, a coat of red hair covers most of the upper body, and eyes become a yellowish color. This transformation looks pretty evil although the individual may not be bad. In terms of power, the SS4 increase is astonishing. This level is far superior to any other form of super saiyan. In this form, the saiyan literally only needs to look at something to attack it with a blast of energy- yes SS4 is that powerful!
To reach this level the saiyan must have their tail. They will first become a golden Oozaru before reaching the level of SS4.
Super Saiyan 5
Super Saiyan 5 is an unofficial form of a saiyan; it exists in recent comics made in Japan called Dragonball AF. It's unofficial because the comics aren't really widely accepted yet although there is talk of episodes. Regardless, it's a sweet looking level of super saiyan. The hair becomes white and long, the eyebrows disappear once again, and the saiyan is covered in white fur rather than red. At this point, the saiyan has the power of a god- or so I've heard. Seeing as the comic is in Japan, I can't say much more for sure. I have also heard rumors of a Super Saiyan 6 in Dragonaball AF, but who knows?
Super Saiyan 6 (Goku)
Once again Goku Prooves to have acheived yet another level of Super Saiyan. Although this level of Super Saiyan is not shown until the last part of Dragon Ball AF, it is a very big change from Super Saiyan 5, SS6 Goku has a WAY higher power level and even longer and bushier hair. Many people tha have actually seen this level of Super Saiyan think it is just SS3 with purple/black hair that is made up, but it is not! The only thing I see weird about it, is Goku's eyes, they look like they are petrified. Other than that, Super Saiyan 6 is the most sweet level of Super Saiyan, other than Super Saiyan 10.
Super Saiyan 8 (Gotenks)
THIS IS THE SWEETEST LOOKING SAIYAN FORM EVER!!! This is SSJ8 Gotenks! This is a rarer picture than SS10 Goku! It may look fake, I thought it was at first too, but I did some research with my sources and it was verified in Dragon Ball V! Gotenks looks like he came out of his grave a few minutes ago in this picture. There's nothing really different about him, except for the point he's the walking dead...but that's besides the point.This is my 2nd favorite.
Super Saiyan 10 (Goku)
This seems fake too, but it is not! Goku turns into Super Saiyan 10 in Dragon Ball V, which is right after Dragon Ball AF. All that is really known about Goku at this stage is his appearance. To me he looks like a zombie that has turned to stone, but he is really jus a vey furry Super Saiyan. This stage of Super Saiyan shares some raits with SS5, like the white/silver fur on his chest, which has obviously spread all over is body.
Aren't these forms awesome! I'll try to find even more if I can.
